Winter garden texture

Winter frosts and the low angle of the sunlight, show up the ‘bones’ of a design so a good garden design has strong structural elements that give the garden texture, shape and interest at the time of year when there are fewer flowers and colours around to distract the eye. 

A simple way to start adding texture in winter, is to keep the dead stems of architectural plants rather than tidying them up in autumn. Frost will settle on their ‘flowerheads’ and catch the light from the low sun and they’ll be at a good height for you to admire it all.  

Then you can start to introduce stronger structure in the form of clipped or shaggy hedging or shrubs; consider the winter colour of these when choosing so that they add an extra element of interest.
