The landscape of the Lake District has many different characters – the region is so vast spanning from coast to high mountains.

Narrow, wooded valleys with energetic rivers creating steep crags high in the mountains; give way to wider, shallower floodplain valleys where the rivers sweep, grandly into wide, deep lakes with steep, wooded islands dotted across their surface. 

These lakes are trapped in place by a pinch point of sturdier geology narrowing the valley again. Inevitably these have become important crossing points for people who have created rambling, compact villages and towns from the local green slate. Pragmatic when built; picturesque traffic jam today. 

The rivers amble on and pick their way across estuary, saltmarsh and rock to the Irish sea, passing expansive beaches and sand dunes. It’s a beautiful place to be.
